What Can You Be the Best in the World At?

Life is a complex place, filled with endless opportunities and challenges. In this chaos, it’s easy to lose sight of the big picture—our purpose, what we’re truly chasing, and what we’re contributing to the world. A question I ask myself daily is: What can I be the best in the world at?

This simple yet profound question helps us navigate life with clarity. It guides us toward meaningful decisions, pushing away short-term distractions that don’t serve us in the long run. Human nature has an incredible ability to focus on what truly matters. Let’s harness that power to identify our purpose and work toward becoming exceptional in our chosen field.

Life Is a Complex Place:

Complexity often brings confusion. It can make us forget the essentials: why we’re here and what impact we want to have. Yet, clarity emerges when we focus on our purpose. It helps us sideline irrelevant distractions and prioritize what aligns with our goals.

For example:

when we step out to buy groceries, we don’t notice every detail of our surroundings. Instead, we focus on the task at hand. Similarly, we must see life’s journey as a path leading directly to our goals. This focus enables us to channel our energy into what truly matters.

Complexity Sometimes Means Confusion:

In a world obsessed with social media and superficial metrics like followers and likes, we often ask the wrong questions:

  • How do I get attention?
  • How do I stand out?
  • How do I market myself?

The truth is, you stand out by adding value to the world. Focus on mastering your craft rather than worrying about visibility. It’s like fretting over a cargo van’s logistics when you don’t even have a product to transport. The product—what you’re exceptional at—is what matters most.

What's Our Purpose?

Your purpose is what gives your life direction and meaning. Social media is not the goal; it’s merely a tool. Whether your arena is academics, art, or sports, strive to become unstoppable. Be so good at what you do that the world has to notice.

  • The reality is that true greatness is about creating something remarkable and sustainable, not building a facade.

What Are We Chasing?

Too often, we chase what’s flashy and appealing in the short term. But ask yourself: if social media disappeared tomorrow, would your skills, products, or services still hold value?

If the answer is no, start working toward mastery. Build something enduring that doesn’t rely on external validation.

What Are We Bringing to the World?

Adding value to the world starts with introspection:

  • What are you working tirelessly to be exceptional at?
  • What skills are you developing to make a lasting impact?

Your focus should be on mastery—creating value that speaks for itself, whether or not anyone is watching. As Steve Martin said, “Be so good they can’t ignore you.”

The Power of Perspective:

The challenges we face are often less about the world around us and more about how we view those challenges.

  • Perspective is key.

Jim Rohn told a story of two brothers with an abusive, alcoholic father. One grew up to repeat the cycle, while the other became a loving, caring parent. Same circumstances, but their interpretations differed.

This highlights the immense power of perspective. It’s not the events themselves but how we perceive and respond to them that shapes our outcomes.

Complexity vs. Simplicity

Happiness and success often come down to mindset. Some people find positivity even in tough times, while others dwell on negativity regardless of circumstances. Like an orange, what comes out of us under pressure is what we already contain within. If you cultivate positivity and resilience, that’s what you’ll project.

What Are You Leading to Build?

Greatness doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built through relentless dedication and self-belief. When no one else is cheering you on, will you still have the courage to move forward? Every step, every small win, builds the foundation for something extraordinary. The world may call you lucky later, but only you will know the effort and belief that brought you there.

What's the Story Beneath the Surface?

True value lies beneath the surface, beyond perceptions. What are you working on tirelessly to be exceptional at? What’s the unique contribution you’re bringing to the world? Answering these questions will guide you toward creating a legacy that stands the test of time.

The Role of Adversity:

Adversity shapes us. As Seneca said, “No man is more unhappy than he who never faces adversity.” It’s through challenges that we grow and find meaning. Yet, we often sabotage ourselves by focusing on external obstacles rather than addressing our internal barriers.

Remember, we’re the gatekeepers of our potential. By changing our perspective, we can turn adversity into opportunity and unlock our true capabilities.

Begin Today:

Greatness is within all of us. It starts with a choice—a decision to focus on what truly matters, to see the world for its possibilities, and to relentlessly pursue mastery. The journey won’t be easy, but the rewards will be worth it. So, why not start today?
